This unique event is organized by students from Grand Valley State University’s Physical Therapy Program and is an excellent opportunity for wheelchair racers and runners to come together in raising money for a worthy cause. For the past 10 years, proceeds have been donated to Alternatives in Motion. The mission of Alternatives in Motion is to provide wheelchairs to individuals who do not qualify for other assistance, and who could not obtain such equipment without financial aid. The race, appropriately dubbed Run for Shelter, is to be held on April 18, 2009. The course for the race will begin at Willow Hill Elementary School in Traverse City and continue through the surrounding neighborhood and end back at Willow Hill. The Goodwill Inn Homeless Shelter provides emergency shelter and access to donated foods to the homeless in Northern Michigan. In addition to this, the Inn also provides job placement, housing, and vocational, and children’s services. It is owned and operated by GW Homeless Services, Inc. The concept for the race was envisioned by local business owners Karl Bastian and Bill Lancaster. Bastian 47, is co-owner and creative writer for Greenlight Marketing, spurring the advertising agency’s involvement. Both Bastian and Lancaster are avid marathon runners. Greenlight will be involved in advertising for the race, as well as being its primary sponsor. “It’s really a great thing to see your idea come to fruition,” said Bastian in regards to the race. “Especially when it’s a part of such a good cause…We’re really hopeful about turnout for the race.” The official website for the race, runforsheltertc.com, has the registration form for the race and additional information. Beginning with a 16 mile bike race around Big and Little Glen Lake, riders will cover a stretch along M-22 and pass Inspiration Point before taking to the water. Next, participants transition to a short and exciting paddle event where kayaks, stand up paddleboards, surfski’s, or any watercraft powered only by one handheld paddle is allowed. The Challenge concludes with a 2 mile run where participants must push themselves though a Sleeping Bear Dunes climb overlooking the area. Are you up to the Challenge? The run is hosted as the annual fundraiser by the Great Lakes Region of the United States Pony Clubs. Pony Club is an international program for youth that teaches riding, mounted sports, and the care of horses and ponies, thereby developing responsibility, moral judgment, leadership and self-confidence. The organization has produced many of the past and current Olympic and international riders. Runners will get a colorful T-shirt, fun prizes and an opportunity to watch riding and jumping demonstrations by Pony Clubbers.
