| 05/11/2009-05/17/2009 Bay State Bike Week Across Massachusetts MA 617-918-4456 www.baystatebikeweek.org WHAT:Last May, Massachusetts residents were challenged to participate in the first ever Bay State Bike Week, as part of National Bike Month. The goal was to raise awareness about cycling, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and boost the overall health of Bay Staters. This year, the goals are even greater: •Two Hundred-fifty-thousand Mile Pledge – Last year Bay Staters were challenged to collectively bike 50,000 miles. The goal was crushed. This year, it’s time to collectively cycle more than 250,000 miles during National Bike Week, May 11-17. To participate, sign up at www.baystatebikeweek.org and tell us how many miles you (and/or your whole company) will bike that week . •Mass Commute Commuter Challenge - There will also be a friendly competition among Massachusetts companies. Matched against like-sized businesses, companies can compete for prizes (including a NEW bike) and bragging rights. Check it out online at www.baystatebikeweek.org. •Bay State Bike Week Festival and Convoys: Friday, May 15th – 7:00 – 10:00 a.m , Boston City Hall Plaza—Talk about a grand entrance. Join a convoy and bike into Boston escorted by Boston’s finest – the Boston Police. Convoys of cyclists will be formed for rides in and out of Boston, Arlington, Newton, Cambridge and more providing a safe and fun way to commute to work and meet new friends. All convoys finish at City Hall Plaza where free food, fun and music greet all cyclists. Join a convoy or just come for the festival. Check www.baystatebikeweek.com. •Statewide Calendar of Events – Check out the complete list of state-wide events including the Redbones Annual Bike Party, Mass Bike Volunteer Night, Ride of Silence, and the Commuter Challenge Bike Bash. There’s something for everyone! Find details on www.baystatebikeweek.com. While the month of May kicks off the cycling season with Bay State Bike Week, cycling fun continues all summer and into the fall. On Sunday, September 27st, cyclists have a chance to come together again by participating in Boston’s only citywide bike ride, Hub On Wheels. And as gasoline prices skyrocket, even if the health benefits don’t convince commuters to start cycling, soon the environmental and budget benefits alone will. Sponsored by MassCommute and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, there will be all sorts of ways for people to participate: visit www.baystatebikeweek.org to find out! |
