WHERE: Hains Point / East Potomac Park 1100 Ohio Drive SW Washington, DC 20242 BENEFICIARY: Friends of the Orphans is the American funding for Nuestros Pequeсos Hermanos International. The first Friends of the Orphans office was established in 1965 to support the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of NPH children through fundraising and volunteer efforts. Today, the organization has expanded to six regional offices, with the national headquarters in Chicago. The non-profit’s mission is to improve the lives of orphaned, abandoned and disadvantaged children through the support of the NPH network of orphanages in Latin America and the Caribbean. Nuestros Pequeсos Hermanos International (NPH) has been in existence for over 50 years, operating orphanages in Latin America and the Caribbean. With the help of their European, Canadian, and American funding, NPH is currently supporting over 3,000 children in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Peru. NPH provides children with an alternative to poverty and international adoption. In each of its nine countries, NPH works to provide a safe, secure loving home for children who have nowhere else to go. These children live healthy family lives, learning household chores, taking care of each other and receiving an education and learning a vocation, while remaining within their own culture. REGISTRATION: Registration for youth (18 and under) is $20 and adults is $25. All participants will receive a race day t-shirt! Medals will be awarded to the fastest runners in each age category. Prizes will be awarded for the biggest fundraisers, biggest teams and most creative running / walking attire. This is the fourth successive year that Vibha-MN is organizing a walk/run event in the Twin Cities. The 5K and 10K Run events will be professionally timed and awards will be given away in several age categories. There will also be a 5K fun walk. Participants in the 5K walk will be entered into a lucky draw for exciting prizes. All proceeds from the event will be used to support the child welfare projects funded by Vibha in India and the United States. 10 % of the proceeds will be donated to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities area. From Freedom Plaza, runners head southeast down Pennsylvania Avenue toward the National Mall. Runners then turn left onto Constitution Avenue near 3rd Street NW, and right onto 1st Street NW, heading toward the Peace Monument. After passing through the Mall, runners turn right onto Independence Avenue, loop back onto 2nd Street NW, and continue back along the same route to Freedom Plaza. The Health Walk is an out-and-back course starting at Freedom Plaza. Participants will follow the 5K course and head southeast down Pennsylvania Avenue toward the National Mall. Walkers will briefly continue onto Constitution Avenue, a slight left, before the turnaround point where they will continue along the same route back to Freedom Plaza. |
