20/02/2010 Mount Cameroon Race 4100m Cameroon Great Soppo Foy Franklin 00237 75309272 / / foyfrank@yahoo.com The Mount Cameroon Race of Hope is an annual, televised footrace held at Mount Cameroon in the Southwest Province of Cameroon in the last weekend of January or the first weekend of February.[1] The event begins at Molyko Sports Complex in Buea[2] and follows a path up Mount Cameroon and back;[3] the course is a marathon with a total distance of 26 miles.[1] Participants are divided into men's and women's divisions and further subdivided into professionals, youth, and casual runners.[4] The winners in both the men's and women's professional divisions received a purse of 3 million francs CFA in 2007.[5] Teams may enter the race and compete in the relay division.[6] The first Race of Hope was in 1995.[7] Since then, participation has steadily increased; there were 214 participants in 2005, 390 in 2006, and 643 from nine countries in 2007.[2] As of 2008, the winners since the race's inception had all been Cameroonians.
