Since Lauren was 16 months old when she passed away, her death was not considered Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Instead, it belongs to a lesser-known category. Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC), which describes the inexplicable deaths of healthy children between the ages of one and eleven. The SUDC Program was founded in September 2001 to provide a centralized resource of information, research, support and advocacy. Since the SUDC Program is so new, few resources exist to explore possible causes and steps for prevention. Your generous contributions are still a critical component to helping us better understand and curtail this unspeakable tragedy. Last year's event raised over $20K and had over 400 participants! This money went to fund important grants to continue crucial research into SUDC (Sudden Unexplained Death In Childhood) research and Long QT Syndrome research, which causes some unexplained deaths. In honor of Lauren, this year's race proceeds will help fund SUDC research. Below is a link to her website if you want to check it out http://www.laurentrymucha.com/

Every 30 minutes a child is born who will develop a mitochondrial disease by the age of 10. Mitochondria are responsible for creating more than 90% of the energy needed by the body to sustain life and support growth. When they fail, less and less energy is generated in the cell which leads to cell injury and/or cell death. If this process is repeated throughout the body, whole systems begin to fail and the life of the person to whom this is happening, is severly compromised.
