THE S.P.A.M. DIET

By Jim Merrill

October 12th, 2008

Have you ever walked up those stairs and felt like you were carrying a piano, or rolled over in bed and thought your loved one was there and you were hugging him or her, but it turned out to be the other part of your body….your stomach? What about getting up off your chair and your chair pops up with you, or you’re out of breath walking up one flight of stairs; well, the time is now for you to get off your butt and start moving. This is why I developed the S.P.A.M. diet. I know that you’re probably wondering what in the world this S.P.A.M. diet is. First of all, S.P.A.M. stands for “Simply Push and Move”. In other words, push yourself away from the table and move your butt off the couch with some exercise! I finally realized after I stepped on that culprit that just sits there gathering dust on the floor, the infamous scale, that it was time for me to do something other than force a big greasy hamburger and fries down my throat in less than a minute. I planned; I didn’t just jump into this with both feet. My plan was to cut back on my caloric intake and with that I would start walking. Well this all started on August 1st, 2005, and the results after 2 months was astonishing.  I quit smoking on January 1st, 2005. I had lost a total of 20 pounds. What’s the trick you ask? The answer, no tricks and no starvation.  It’s just getting use to changing some of your eating habits, and exercising. You don’t have to get as drastic as I did, whereas I am not eating over 1800 calories a day, and I average 8 miles of walking and 30 minutes of elliptical training each and every day. With this I do 100 body twists, and 100-200 crunches every day.

My weight has fluctuated up and down within 3 pounds, but I still do elliptical training, and a lot of hiking. Now, my wife Lauren, has gotten me into running in all the 5k's around Denver. We also joined the Irish Snug Pub (runner's club) located on Colfax and Franklin. We did the "Run the Rocks" this morning at Red Rocks. As far as total weight loss, I haven't loss anymore, I have just maintained. I got down to 172 1/2 lbs, but that was too thin, so I gained up to 178 and have stabilized right there. I feel so much better. by the way I will turn 61 next month and feel better than when I was in my fortys.
