04/24/2010 Adopt a Doctor Ultra Marathon 44 Miles University of New England, Biddeford Campus Maine Joseph Phommasith 401-421-0606 adoptadoctor.org info@adoptadoctor.org Medical Students “Adopt” Doctors by Running Providence, RI- April 6, 2010 – 44-Mile Ultra-Marathon benefitting Adopt A Doctor Saturday, April 24, 2010 7:00AM – 5:00PM Alfond Lawn, University of New England, Biddeford Campus The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine is organizing the fourth annual Adopt A Doctor Marathon to raise money to pay the salaries of 18 doctors in Africa. “Adopt A Doctor is taking direct, meaningful action to address a serious problem that does not get the attention it deserves from the media or policymakers,” said medical student Jeremy Wright, the lead organizer of the marathon. “Supporting Adopt A Doctor’s efforts every year through the 44-Mile Marathon allows us to make a significant impact on many lives in developing nations.” AMSA at the University of New England is no stranger to the organization that incentivizes doctors to remain practicing in countries where they are most needed. They have sponsored Adopt A Doctor since its inception in 2003 through other fundraising events. Nationally, AMSA is the oldest and largest independent association of physicians-in-training. The UNE Chapter consists of 111 members, who are actively involved in health policy advocacy, fundraising for charities, and organizing educational lectures for AIDS Week on campus. “Our partnership with AMSA at the University of New England is crucial to our ability to support 18 medical doctors,” stated Ray Rickman, President and Founder of Adopt A Doctor. “The student-organized marathon is an example of people’s ability to make a positive difference through fun and creative ways.” Adopt A Doctor, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Providence, supplements the salaries of medical doctors in Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone, and Malawi. These countries have fewer medical doctors than almost any other nation in the world.
